70 investigations underway

THE FBI has revealed that it has 70 active investigations into spam-related crimes.

Talking to the FTC's Spam Summit in Washington, the DOJ and FBI said that the public could expect more prosecutions from spam and botnet activities in the coming months.

According to IDG, the DOJ and FBI said last month ongoing investigations have found more than a million botnet crime victims.

While looking for criminals who control botnets, the DOJ will begin targeting "bot brokers," the people who negotiate the sale of botnets.

FBI special agent J. Keith Mularski, said that FBI is working with the National Cyber-Forensics and Training Alliance (NCFTA), which is a partnership between law enforcement agencies, universities and private businesses, to identity spammers.

The NCFTA, launched in 2002, has identified more than 100 "significant spammers," including five tied to traditional organised crime, he said.
