Virgin allows laptops on flights again

Ban branded restrictive
Thu Sep 28 2006, 16:24
PILCHARD BRANSON'S airline Virgin Atlantic has changed its policy banning the use of battery-powered Dell and Apple laptops on its flights.

The move follows complaints from passengers who felt the ban was too restrictive.

Virgin was worried that the laptops would explode on board, however it was pointed out to them that only certain batteries installed in the Dell and Apple laptops in the last couple of years explode.

According to the Times, Virgin is issuing cabin staff with the lists of battery serial numbers as supplied by Apple and Dell, so will be able to check to see if an individual's computer has the potential to cause a problem or not.

If the battery's serial number is on the list, it must be removed, individually wrapped and placed in carry-on luggage, preferibly on a BA flight. µ
