Athlon FX looks in mirror, Opteron gazes back

THERE'S SO LITTLE difference between the single 940 pin Opteron and the Athlon64 FX that getting a fag (cigarette) paper between them is impossible.

The truth is that what AMD calls the Opteron 14X series and the Athlon64FX are one and the same beastie, but then there's clock rating to consider too.

Here are the distributor to dealer prices for the Opteron 14X series, and the price for the FX chip is included too.

OPT140 = 1.4GHz $242.00
OPT142 = 1.6GHz $303.00
OPT144 = 1.8GH $445.00
OPT146 = 2.0GH $689.00
Ath64FX = 2.2GH $757.00

To dispel the confusion that exists about memory, all 940 socket AMD 64-bit chips need registered RAM, while 745 chips need unbuffered.

Right now, the majority of boards available for the 940 pin Athlopteron use the Nvidia chipset, supporting a 940 pin single microprocessor with no ECC.

As usual, Tyan has come to the rescue, because it has a single CPU board using the AMD chipset, and supports ECC. That beastie is called the S2850, and its specs can be found here. ยต
