Obama picks Hollywood sock-puppet for running mate

Anti-pirate, anti-privacy, anti-encryption, not too sure about net neutrality.
Monday, 25 August 2008, 11:15

BARACK OBAMA has chosen one of the most rabid pro-music and film industry senators in the business to be his running mate in the forthcoming presidential elections.

Joe Biden has been selected as Obama's choice for vice presidential candidate over the weekend.

While his boss might have glowing credentials on technology, Biden has spent most of his career allied with the FBI and copyright holders. He ranks toward the bottom of CNET's Technology Voters' Guide, and has come up with some of the worst anti-privacy legislation.

Biden has been one of Hollywood and the recording industry's biggest fans and has been working to expand copyright laws. In 2002 he tried to make it a felony to trick certain types of devices into playing unauthorized music or executing unapproved computer programs. The law was caned by almost every technology outfit in the land and was quietly dropped.

Later he wrote to the Justice Department demanding that it use taxpayer money to do the work of the RIAA and MPAA to drag P2P users into court. Fortunately this was ignored by the DoJ.

Last year, Biden sponsored an RIAA-backed bill aimed at restricting Americans' ability to record and play back individual songs from satellite and Internet radio services. This was in support of his chums at the RIAA who were suing satellite radio companies at the time.

Biden has refused to answer questions on technology. This might have something to do with the fact he supports Internet taxes and censoring libraries and schools, which is a wee bit different from Obama's official stance.

He has also sponsored the anti-privacy Violent Crime Control Act which was anti-encryption and demanded users turn over encryption keys to the government. It was a reaction to this bill, which failed, which lead to the creation of PGP.

In 2001 he took the FBI's stance during the debates on the Patriot Act although this changed last year when Democrats wanted to embarrass President Bush over warrantless wiretapping. At the time his conversion on the road to Damascus was seen as trying to court liberals in his party at a point where he was thinking of running for President himself.

He seemed to go back to his own ways recently when he demanded the government spend $1 billion in US tax dollars so police can monitor peer-to-peer networks for illegal activity.

As far as Net neutrality is concerned, Biden has stood back claiming it was not necessary to have laws to protect it.

Fortunately the history of US Vice-presidents usually indicates that they are not there to actually do anything unless the President is shot, or caught assisting in a burglary. ยต

Garbage In Garbage Out

Nick [Farrell],

Don't worry about it too much. In this day and age, any bigotted philistine with a personal hidden agenda to server neoconservative fascism will soon be outed with increased covert underground surveillance to discover and uncover loads of dirty little secrets.

What you Give is what you Get, nowadays. And if he's a plonker, he won't last long. You don't actually think that Obama doesn't already have the Secret Services working his Corner, surely? Is not Half a Century of Redneck Hickery and Capital Thievery not enough?

Oh just lovely

Another damn election with both parties failing to be worthy of a vote. If McCain decides to go with Romney for VP this is going to be a real sad election.

Think positively

After Obama and Biden get through a term, maybe the average joe could afford to actually buy a media library...

Only losers in that equation: Lawyers!

Obama, Biden beholden to Hollywood

What 'glowing credentials on technology' does Obama have? Do you leftist media types just make this stuff up?

And yes, Biden is beholden to the Hollywood types. As is Obama. Who do you think has been bankrolling his campaign, plus giving him all kinds of advice?

It's a contest to see which criminal gang is going to rule the U.S., the emotionless, greedy business types, or the emotionally-crippled, greedy business types posing as artists.

Either way, we all lose.

We can only hope...

...that anything these guys say/promise will go by the wayside as do all other campaign "promises", should they get elected.

Stupid Public

This is not racist but the truth.

The only reason people feel that Obama is "for the people" is that he represents visually the non white ruling class.

however, he is not as he appears at all.

Brilliant!

As China demonstrates, there's nothing more dangerous to mankind than when capitalists join hands with socialists.

Are you pinging me?

Brother Farrell, I do fear the worst in this business. What's more, it has been whispered in certain inauspicious circles, privy to me, that this shoo-less Joe, may have provided "dirty trainers" to (FIG ) the International Gymnastics federation. Furthermore, it is no stretch of the imagination to see this villian to have bound Leopold Mozart in stocks for writing down prodigious compositions belonging to another, Wolfgang Amadeus, forced to perform at the tender age of five. Obamba would be wise to place his Ipod in a lock box.
Hangman, hangman, turn your head awhile,
I think I see a little Led for your head riding a many mile, mile, mile
Have you brought me some silver, Have you brought me some gold
But now I laugh and pull so hard
And see Bo Joe swinging the Gallups Polls
You know that we're too damn poor to keep you from
Wiff Waff is Coming Home!

British kids - moral authority...lol

Don't worry Euro trash, you'll still be able to pirate all our stuff under Obama/Biden.

I think you guys should worry about your own nation, and your own path towards a police state. Britiain is a mess and the future looks bleak for you. I guess as long as you can download stuff it's ok though.

And when all else fails, just blame the U.S. government for all your problems as usual.

You haven't been paying attention

these past 7 years:

Fortunately the history of US Vice-presidents usually indicates that they are not there to actually do anything unless the President is shot, or caught assisting in a burglary.

Vice President Dick Cheney has a great deal of power in this administration and has been behind many aspects of national security policy, including controversial policies. The VP is as important as the president allows him to be.

Well then

Well then, the best place for him is OUT of Congress and be the VP. This way he can not sponsor any bills on any subject. One of the best ways to neuter any Congressman is to turn them into a VP.
Think about it!?!

VP power has changed ....

..., as shown by Gore and especially Cheney.

Then again, since doesn't have to raise campaign funds, will he still be beholden to Hollywood?

Get out and vote, my ass

We need a freakin' revolution. I thought the only thing that would make me hesitant about voting for Obama was if he made Hillary his running mate. If The Inquirer is even partially right in this, then it's basically a choice between two Satans.

"Vote for Bush. Better a devil you know, than a devil you don't know."

How's that for a slogan?

Irrelevant

Unless Obama were to suddenly die in a plane crash or something, it doesn't matter. Vice presidents don't do anything but look pretty and gather votes.

I Can't Believe it's not Better

Biden's been in office 10 years longer than McCain and shows just as little understanding of the net as he does the US Constitution. Over and over again Biden has sponsored and voted for clearly illegal bills that are in direct violation of the Constitution. The only legal way to remove these rights would be to amend the Constitution which they know the public would never approve. So the real question is has he not actually read the law that he swore before 'God' to uphold every time he got reelected or did he have his fingers crossed like Bush Jr?

Amendment 4
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and
effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and
no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or
affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the
persons or things to be seized.

Romance and Assassination

Yep, except that I'm prepared to bet that Obama is the first assassinated 'black' president of the USA; so Biden will get to be president.

In the news today, plot uncovered to kill Barack Obama

Almost ;-)

That constitution should extend to the countries that are invaded by America.

America - over 50 wars/conflicts since WW2.

America - Bringing First Person Shooter reality to foreigners everywhere!

Given the article's purpose for a VP...

You could consider Biden a life insurance policy for Obama!

I'm going to write in Ron Paul...
