NEC slashes chip manufacturing

R&D is too expensive

JAPANESE GIANT NEC will shut down three of its chip manufacturing plants to reduce capital spending.

According to nikkei.net (sub required), it currently has six fabs but will reduce those to three.

The rising cost of research and development on advanced semiconductor processes is being blamed for the move.

Just recently, Sony flogged off its top semiconductor fab to Toshiba. µ
