Sony flogs more tellies than anyone in the US

Should help pay for the PS3

SONY ELECTRONICS has reached the number one spot in the US TV market share for 2006 says The NPD Group's retail tracking service.

Sony reckons the high market share is much to do with its flashy Bravia LCD flat-panels and the Grand Wega rear-projection micro-displays. It's not a massive win, having only beat "the closest competitor" by 5 per cent in total television dollar market share.

The number one share in total TV dollar sales has been held by Sony each year since 2003, says The NPD Group, also the year that the group began tracking the figure. Sony's greatest achievement of the year has been its micro-display units, having held a 21 per cent greater dollar share than second best.

Randy Waynick of Sony's Home Products Division smugly said in a press release, "The numbers tell the story, when it comes to market leadership in television, Sony is at the top of the charts. There can only be one number one." One wonders how many XBox 360s are plugged into the tellies. And how long it will be before Microsoft decides to join Sony and Apple as telly floggers. µ
