UK Gov posts carbon footprint calculator

See how big your carbon feet are
Wed Jun 20 2007, 18:50
FOR THOSE OF YOU used to swanning about in jet planes and using the latest, greatest and most power-hungry PCs on the planet, the UK government has served up a carbon footprint calculator.

However, such is the demand for the online toy that the Directgov servers are struggling to cope.

"The Act on CO2 calculator is currently seeing an overwhelming response and we're working to fix the problems you may be experiencing," reads a notice on the site.

We can just see all those PCs now logging on, creaking with the strain, heating up offices where the air con is being switched up a notch or two. Workers no doubt frustrated in their attempts to measure their carbon feet are probably nipping out for a fag to calm down.

We estimate the footprint monitor will have to plant some 8,578 trees in order to pay for itself today.

Here's the L'INQ. µ

* UPDATE I tried this web site. It appears INQ central is a quarter as bad as other UK houses. But the site is so slow that I could probably have installed 50 windfarms/minute in the time it took to complete. Imagine a method to convert politicians' hot air into real power. Now that would be an offset. Ed.

Do you think the move was justified?
