TRANSMETA HAS TEAMED UP with TDV Vison, a division of Chinese shoe maker Pou Chen Group, to slip its 800MHz Crusoe TM5800 processor into a Tablet PC.

Transmeta reckons this will be the first time a Tablet has been offered at less than a thousand bucks, although Research Machines in the UK offers a Tablet for GBP699, which is close, depending on the exchange rate.

Anyhow, the TDV Vison V800XPT Tablet PC, weighs in at 2.6 lbs is an inch thick and sports a USB keyboard module, an optional external USB optical drive, a 30GB hard drive and 128MB of DDR RAM memory that is upgradeable to 512MB.

It will be available from September in North America, Europe and China for around $900, the company says.

TDV Vison, Inc. is a subsidiary of the Pou Chen Group - the world's largest sports shoe manufacturer. The giant company also owns a variety of technology companies and, says Transmeta, has invested over $1 billion developing a high-tech industrial zone, complete with a residential/commercial complex and hotel centre, on 3,100 acres in the Jiangsu Province in China.

Larry Wei, president and chief executive officer, TDV Vison reckons: "Transmeta provides a very compelling offering for the Tablet PC market." ยต
