AMD says Opteron bug not huge problem

Working to fix it with BIOS vendors

CHIP FIRM AMD said that a bug in the Opteron microprocessor only occurs under rare circumstances and was found during internal testing.

Under certain circumstances, a combination of the REP MOVS instruction set produces incorrect data, AMD said today.

And such a combination was likely only to occur when people were creating code in assembler, and not when using compilers, said AMD.

Nevertheless, the AMD rep added, his firm is working like billy-o with BIOS vendors to implement a workaround.

The bug can be fixed by using such a BIOS workaround, he added. µ
