Graphics acronyms go too far

CFAA MSAA QAA CSAA... WTF?
Tue Jul 22 2008, 12:16

WE'VE JUST HAD THE PLEASURE of reading one of the most acronym-laden wibbles we've ever had the misfortune to stumble across.

The article is penned by Kyle and his chums, and concerns the anti-aliasing filtering quality on the new Radeon 4800 series. ATI offers a new 'edge-detect custom filtering AA' which the red team says will offer better quality and performance.

The team has done a rather good job of breaking down the different quality levels, but the conclusion page is practically gibberish, and highlights just how geeky hardware hackery has become.

Here's the conclusion to the article, in handy algebraic format:

ATI 24xCFAA
NV 4xAA < ATI 4xAA < ATI 8xMSAA = NV 8xQ MSAA
NV 8xCSAA < NV 8xQ MSAA < ATI 8xMSAA
NV 16xCSAA < ATI 12xCFAA
NV 16xQ CSAA = ATI 24xCFAA.

Proof, if ever you needed it, that the number of acronyms used just to describe anti-aliasing on graphics cards is ludicrously insane. If you can decipher all that, congratulations, you get a sweetie, come to the front of the class. If not... try harder. Or change industries.

You can enjoy the whole incomprehensible article here.

The whole article is condensed in the above; just re-arrange and add qualifiers as needed. Simple.

@ some bloke

So, you prefer to know exactly which of the graphics cards is faster in each particular, gameplay fuckingirrelevant 3DMark test?
Well.. Happy ragdoll physics test watching to you, then.

Best wishes.

Your second line

Shouldn't line 2 be:
NV 4xAA < ATI 4xAA < ATI 8xMSAA = NV 8xMSAA ??

Names Don't Make Image.

Ifequipment of image can handle BIG Numbers, You Get Smoother, Cleaner image. Like Working Up image or expanding image, theres use for all that glop. Its Just More way to better Professional useage, One Frame At time.

Take My brd Commentos, Before Panavision it was Diaorama format, Before That Conflict between Thrust Stage & crummy paladium. Before that Church or Temple Stage Vs. Parade. Before that, Imagination....Yes its true Olympics or Eating Healthly.

Bad summary

Lines two and three to your summary are contradictory:

Line 2 you show ATI 8xMSAA = NV 8xQ MSAA
Line 3 you have NV 8xQ MSAA < ATI 8xMSAA

They can't be equal yet one less than the other...

gibberish paper generator

For people who like that sort of I.T. gibberish text, here is a program that creates absolutely meaningless papers of total gibberish like this:
"...he methodology for our algorithm consists of four independent components: context-free grammar, Internet QoS,..."

I do agree

line 2 ends with ATI 8xMSAA = NV 8xQ MSAA
line 3 ends with NV 8xQ MSAA < ATI 8xMSAA
Nonsence indeed

@Some Bloke: [H]'s playable framerate makes much more sense than all those tests showing 7-9-13 or 80-140-190 FPS.

This is something new?

Even the best articles on [H] are gibberish, although that's less to do with the complex nature of the stuff under review than it is to do with [H] being incapable of explaining anything without resorting to reproducing marchitectural slides.

Or whole paragraphs on the backstory for the games they use in benches, as though the games hardware buying public needed to be told what Crysis is.

Their "playable framerate" breakdowns are the single most useless comparative tool I've ever had the misfortune to witness, an unending parade of complex time graphs, based on spurious personal opinion rather than fact.

Thank god for Anandtech is all I can say.

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
