Swyx claims trad voice is dead

VoIP rules and all that jazz
Wednesday, 18 October 2006, 18:38
SPECIALIST IP SWITCH vendor, Swyx, reckons that traditional voice systems based around analogue switchboards are now officially dead. Research by MZA proves more IP than analogue voice lines are now being employed.

Everyone's heard of IP convergence but no-one's really sure what that means according to Guenter Junk, Swyx's CEO. So the company's produced a leaflet called - 'The evolution of business communications'.

It's also launched a new web site called telephonyrevolution.com from which the leaflet can be downloaded.

Naturally Swyx claims that all types of communication will eventually be integrated including SMS and presence (SIP) as well as the usual suspects like voicemail, email and instant messaging (IM).

However, Junk admits in several areas - particularly presence and SMS - there are no industry standards to make the merger easier. For example, how is an SMS message delivered if your mobile handset is making a VoIP call over WiFi via the IP switch?

Better still, how can an IM system like Messenger show your availability if you're hanging of the switch rather than a desktop PC?

Although Swyx claims it is seeking to help end users, the INQ rather suspects that Swyx is really searching for resellers for its software driven IP switch.

After all, if you can build an enterprise network which is robust enough to prevent data loss for applications like CRM and email, then you can build a decent enough network to handle corporate wide VoIP.

As Swyx says, if you're so worried that the company's voice system might collapse if you use IP, don't throw out the old analogue system and wiring! ยต
