Mac users believe themselves superior - official

Bloomin' hippies
Thursday, 17 January 2008, 14:03

APPLE MAC users are more likely to be open minded and liberal than the rest of the population, according to research conducted in the run-up to the Macworld Expo in San Francisco this week.

But since we're talking about the US population, where liberal is a dirty word and summat like half the population still believes virgins can have children, this probably means little to your average European.

The study of 7,500 respondents, also revealed that people who buy Macs are " less modest, and more assured of their own superiority than the population at large." Quelle surprise!

Accordiing to Sarah Welch, of Mindset Media, which ran the study, what separates the winners from the losers in a market like that for personal computers, "is often the ability to identify and reach the right psychographic. "

By designing computers in coloured plastic cases and charging over the odds for them Apple seems to have stumbled across a magic psychographic formula. µ

Degenerated superiority

I have to admit that one of the key mental blocks to buying a Mac, regardless of technology, is my objection against Apple substantially lowering the requirements to feel superior.

LOL@Apple

Overpriced and Candy themed computers logically make you feel superior.

Retards...

Taking back 'liberal'

Sooo... in one paragraph you speak of open-mindedness and in the next you denounce people who believe in the virgin birth? How ironic.

And I think it's high time that the rightful owners of the word 'liberal' take this word back... the 'liberals' of today bear no resemblance to the classical liberal of yesteryear who believed in freedom, minimal government, and democracy. Liberals of today are Socialists - the polar opposite of what a liberal should stand for. They just slapped the name 'liberal' on themselves in an effort to disguise their Socialist agenda; kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.

How interesting, really!?

I never noticed that about Mac users... What a UNIQUE ("likey to be original" - "goes against the grain" - "new and refreshing") peice of information!

Who would have thought?

But what if you own and use a MAC and a PC? Are you a "Superior Inferior"!?

As a Mac Fanboy

and a Libertarian, I am definitely not a "liberal".
Am superior though.

virgin birth

May as well chalk up those who believe that a powerless figurehead monarchy is still worth taxpayer support as well...

The only reason that half of us left-o-pond folk still believe in divine anything is because of the fun blend of rednecks and illegals living below the mason-dixon line. Combine staunchly devout catholics with bible-belters who oppose the teaching of evolution and voila, you have a recipe for blind faith in some weird stuff.

Still better than those who see Jobs as God.

mac v pc

steve jobs said of his demographic that they "don't read anymore."

sure, i'm a PC, in my old brown suit, but i'd rather be literate than liberal.

D'uh

When you've looked at the rest of the plebian choices and then choose the best - of course, we'd feel superior - sure, the other choice is usually based on either not being to afford anything better (PC users) or tinkers who can't understand going in and buying something ready to use (Linux users), it's natural for others to feel jealously but that's the natural course of action - same as non Ferrari owners.

Virgins _can_ give birth!

"[Half] the [US] population still believes virgins can have children"

And they're quite right, too - there are many documented, non-miraculous, cases.

(Hints: (1) females: the hymen's not imperforate in 99.8% of females who reach breeding age; (2) males: sperm donors.)

I've a feeling that's not what you meant, though. ;-)

Apple Ego

Do half as much for twice the price. You have to be ignorant to to have a Mac. I guess the superiority complex comes with PC ignorance.

Not Virgin*s*

Not Virgins, just *one* virgin. And in counterpoint, the liberal humanists that populate so much of Europe and the internet probably do identify with Mac-goers, as they struggle to believe in anything greater than their own selves.

Big Mac is superior

Yeah, what's your problem with virgins giving birth? Got something against virgins, do we?
I'd call you a liberal but I guess I don't understand the context.
And when you say "Mac" do you mean "Big Mac" or what?
Hey, Inquirer users believe themselves superior. Who says I'm wrong? What, you believe you're inferior then? Just what do you believe anyway?
And who cares?

More money then brains

When I can buy a windows based laptop that has the exact same hardware: CPU, memory , motherboard , screen , videocard , HHD , same I/O ports for $1000-$2000 less then a MACBOOK/PRO. I whiped out Windows and installed install OSX 10.5 for $129 + 2hrs time. I can only think Apple buys are just a not the sharpest knife in the kitchen. That little Apple emblem is very expensive. OHYA I will also get a added 2 years on the warrenty with no extra cost. I believe APPLE owners have way more money then brains!!!

Stupid

What is with the stupid articles on this website. Mike Magee should look into clearing some of this crap out. This is one of the dumbest articles I've read all week. You need a study to come up with this stuff?

Lipstick on a 'liberal'

Interstingly, according to the Online Etymology Dictionary, from the 1820s, 'liberal' in the American political context has tended to mean "favorable to government action to effect social change."

In this light the socialists could have some claim to using the word 'liberal' to describe their agenda.

Re: Taking back 'liberal'

Russell, over here in socialist Canada when we get sick we take our government issued card to the hospital and get free treatment. Some other socialist things we like are the roads to be built as cheap as possible by the government, our elderly taken care of via pension and bonuses given to women who are about to have children.

Please tell me why these are horrible things, and explain why our drugs cost pennies while in say the haven of freedom the U.S. drugs cost so much, (of course it's capitalism and the true freedom of an open market at all costs, selling health.) Socialism up here means not paying for things you should never pay for, like say, health care and taking care of the poor, destitute and disabled. Please argue.

Understanding "Liberal"

You really have to understand what liberal means in the U.S.A. before you can comment further. It means "pleasure seeking without consequence". Unprotected sex causes pregnancy? Get an abortion. Drug use causes dependency? Get medical help. Etc, etc, all at the cost of the general population. In this country, liberalism creates socialized programs with the idea that society is responsible for fixing any of an individual's problems, but has no right to be judgmental about the behavior that caused the problem, i.e., there is no personal responsibility.

Most Americans have a different philosophy, "do what you want and deal with the consequences yourself", with only minimal assistance to get the fallen back on their feet.

The entire “Liberal vs Conservative” debate here is totally about “Societal Responsibility” versus “Personal Responsibility” and most people simply fall in the middle. Those on the liberal side feel its ok to “use up” society’s resources for pleasure seeking, while the conservatives are often perceived as “heartless” to a person who’s simply fallen into a personal rut.

There’s certainly the money issue, Liberal calling Conservatives greedy for not wanting their money to pay for social programs: Unlimited wealth and no restrictions on getting it. But a rational person can see that by depleting social resources, lasciviousness impoverishes the nation as a whole.

Thus, to be truly liberated of your dues to society you must be naturally superior (narcissistic), as opposed to the ultra conservative who feels he or she has--earned--the right to be greedy.

Once you understand the difference, you can see why those who live for the moment buy whatever trendy toys come along. These are emblematic of a lifestyle that screams “live for the moment” and lets society deal with the fallout.

Quelle Surprise Indeed

I like Mac product and love Mac software, but I get the willies every time I encounter one of the mac faithful. It is no surprise at all that the mac user group feels superior, much like that other major cult group afflicting the U.S. today -- fundamentalists christians.

And as to Russell's comment above, you should try reading Christ's sermons in your New Testament more carefully before you go round slamming "socialism." The early Church was committed to a socialist, egalitarian conduct of its day to day economic and social affairs. You have the patriarchal, greedy, intensely self centered church fathers in later centuries (Pope Leo, John Calvin, Martin Luther, Torquemada, among thousands of others) to thank for the hard hitting, unforgiving, soul grinding burden of modern american capitalist enterprise.

And Russell, the only one putting lipstick on a pig around here is you when you try and glorify a knocked up teen in the shroud of an imaginary virgin birth. But you're free to believe however you want, something I'm certain neither you nor the macfascistas would allow the rest of us to do if either of you called the shots.

But pigs need....

...to feel purdy too.

Apple's products are aesthetic design and public relations. Nothing they make is functionally superior to competing products but they look much better.

I have no desire to own a mac notebook but they really are very attractive as are most other apple products.

Somehow, though,I have managed to resist their lure. Enough people think me a pompous git as it is...

Mates, It's upscale bling!

> ...computers in coloured plastic cases...

You have a well deserved reputation for delivering news in a style that is both catty and funny, but please stop writing descriptions of the iMac and the iBook which first appeared in 1998 as if that was fresh news!

Take a look around and notice if there is an Apple branded computer that is sold in a coloured plastic case today, or in the last few years.

If you had written instead that Apple's products, not just its computers, are merely utilitarian products, blessed with outstanding industrial design, packaged with upscale bling, and which more often than not just work well and reliably, you might have been closer to the truth.

@virgins+uh huh

There are about a half dozen "true" virgin births per year in humans worldwide (yes it's about a one in a billion(US) chance) caused by an egg cell beginning spontaneous cell division. The offspring are of course all female and share their mothers dna... This is actually a survival strategy in some species whose populations consist almost entirely of females.
Sarah Welch sounds like a very well compensated quack.

Heh

That's hilarious. Let me see - for laptops we got:

2 Macs
4 Gateways
1 Acer
2 IBMs
1 Non-name something

For desktops we got:

1 Emachine
4 Beige boxes
1 IBM

Other junk includes:

1 Amiga 500
1 C128D
2 C64
1 Timex Sinclair ZX81

What does that make us?
