"Nothing would give me more pleasure to talk about NV4x" said Jen-Hsun.
Er, nothing!?
Dave reports that "Jen-Hsun made note that potentially as many as five distinct NV4x graphics processors may be in production at any one time."
As we reported earlier, Nvidia's lunch(sic) date - CeBIT 2K4 in March - for NV40 seems to have shifted backwards by a month or so.
Consequently we wonder if "as many as five distinct NV4x" GPUs are now possible because what was going to be the flagship marchitecture for the Q2 launch (the 175 million transistor "NV40") has been pushed downwards and NV45 (circa 210 million transistors) has been brought forward?
Dave also comments that "Nvidia actually has the largest "scrap" (wasted die) of any semiconductor in the industry which is probably a good reason for their margin performance over the past year."
We concur, and whilst Nvidia still owns in workstation performance, the heat - in the mid and especially high-end desktop and mobile arenas - that ATI managed to turn up on Nvidia simply can't be ignored.
Dave finishes by saying "Jen-Hsun apparently commented that the rumours suggesting the announcement of NV4x in "a couple of short months" and that these are "likely to be correct"."
So all stories do come true in the end? µ
