SEARCH OUTFIT Google is experimenting with the open-source version of Sun's Solaris operating system.

Rumours are starting to fly about the company that the outfit is so impressed that it might be considering replacing its global network of Linux servers and their Intel chips.

According to Network World, the release of Solaris source code 15 months ago as well as new AMD based servers from Sun to run it have attracted Google's attention.

Sun CIO Robert Worrall has confirmed that Google already runs a "significant amount" of Solaris in its data centres.

He claims the outfit is one of a number of customers "excited about the possibility" of moving more Linux servers to AMD Opteron servers based around Solaris.
