OpenSparc gains Traction

Sun thinks Niagara is a traction engine
Monday, 2 October 2006, 17:17
SUN IS JOLLY pleased with the waves that open source Niagara UltraSparc T1 microprocessor seems to be making against the likes of IBM's Power and Intel's Itanium.

According to CIO today, more than 60 percent of the trial units of Niagara, have been ordered by new customers who were giving it a try out. That is a pretty high take up for a new product.

Niagara seems to be attracting a bit of interest from outside Sun's normal range of punters. Because it has few heat issues it is fitting in snugly into data centres which are spending a fortune on cooling.

Niagara is being flogged through the OpenSparc program, in which specifications of the microprocessor are shared within an open-source community.
