Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6700 Kentsfield costs up to $1499

With fan, of course

WE TRIED to find out whether the QX6700 is available in US retail and, core blimey, is this baby is really expensive.

The cheapest we could find was at Tigerdirect for $1100 - the good thing is that it is available. You can order one here.

The more expensive one with a super-expensive fan costs $1299.99 and usually ships in seven to twenty one days. You can get one here.

Newegg is actually trying to flog this same CPU for $1499.00. It is unavailable at press time, here.

The associated bits and bobs: EVGA nForce 680i SLI Nvidia Socket 775 ATX motherboard with audio, PCI Express SLI, Dual Gigabit LAN, S/PDIF, USB 2.0 and Firewire, Serial ATA RAID sells for $249.99. And the Asus 680i board will end up even more expensive.

Remember Asus' 4x4 motherboard costs around $300 and two FX74 CPU's will cost $999 for two pieces and you can say that, pricewise, AMD is super competitive to Intel's offer.

So, one more time, Intel Kentsfieled with EVGA 680i board ends up at $1100+$250 = $1350, while Quad FX two top CPUs with a board ends at $1300 still around $50 cheaper and this is the best-case scenario.

In the worst-case scenario, you need to spend $1299.99 on the CPU with fan + $250 for the board and you end up at $1550.00. The Newegg option gets you to $1499.99 for the CPU and fan, plus $249.99, making $1750.00 with two cents change.

Here's Newegg:
