Absolutely fabless
Tue Mar 14 2006, 11:08
CHINESE FOUNDRY Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) said its on the hunt for more customers in Europe and undertaking more pre- and post-sales activities.

It claims that it has grown its foundry business in Europe and has teamed up with TT Silicon to provide customer services for fabless firms in the UK and in Northern Europe.

A "fabless" company is a firm which designs semiconductors which are then farmed out to so-called "pure play" foundries, which then makes the chips. The biggest pure play foundry is TSMC based in Taiwan, while a good example of one of the most successful fabless firms is graphics chip designer Nvidia. µ
