Bum steer
Friday, 8 December 2006, 10:20
CNET EDITOR James Kim died trying to save his family after an online mapping service gave him a bum steer.

According to Associated Press, Kim, 35, was driving home from a vacation with his wife, Kati, and daughters, four-year-old Penelope and seven-month-old Sabine, when his online mapping service told them to take a wrong turn.

They ended up lost in the wilderness in Oregon, in north-west US and out of petrol. Kim left his family to look for help and when searchers found his dead body yesterday, he had walked 13 kilometres through rugged terrain, wearing only light clothing.

AP said that Kim was too cyber-savvy for his own good and took the route from Grants Pass to Gold Beach from an online mapping service, unaware that no one in their right mind would attempt that route in winter.

Kim's wife and daughters were rescued. More here. ยต
