Sagem abandons Microsoft for Symbian

Makes all out attack on UK market
Thu May 22 2003, 11:28
IN A SERIOUS attempt to crack the UK's GSM handset market, French manufacturer, Sagem, has set up shop in Staines - the town made famous by comedian Ali G.

Sagem certainly appears to have done its homework with the news that all four major UK networks will be offering its handsets.

The company now claims to possess a full range of handsets but in another blow to Microsoft it has quietly dropped its Pocket PC based wireless PDA.

Instead it intends to introduce a Smartphone handset by the summer.

Sagem wouldn't be drawn as to whose software will be used but here's a big hint -- Symbian was named as a key partner on one of its presentation slides. Draw your own conclusions.

Spearheading its breakthrough into the UK market is the freshly released myX-6 handset. This is a colour handset aimed clearly at the youth market.

Its CCD based camera (developed together with Sharp) takes some of the best photos we've seen so far. It has a lens cover and best of all even offers a zoom facility. Crucially for the youth market it can support a multitude of audio formats including Wave (.wav) which anyone with a PC can create. µ
