Tuesday, 1 August 2006, 08:39
BIG BLUE will introduce five mainstream servers that will use the next version of Opteron processors.

See AMD Opterons get number changes and AMD Opteron 1207 numbers emerge.

IBM will throw a sop to Intel by saying it will use "Woodcrest" chips in servers it will launch too.

But the IBM Opteron machines will be upgradeable to four processor chips in the future, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal.

At the opening of a factory in Dresden last year, CEO Hector Ruiz said that it was likely IBM would adopteron more Opterons during 2006.

Two of IBM's new servers will be blade configurations, according to the Journal. AMD claimed yesterday that it now holds 25 per cent of the server market. ยต
