GTX 280 Tri-SLI OK after all

Hardware Rounduppery So says the Guru of 3D
Thu Jun 19 2008, 09:42

HILBERT MADE GOOD ON HIS promise and delivered today his Guru3D review of SLI and Tri-SLI GTX280. Dropping 1950 buckaroos on three cards might not be the most sensible thing you can do, but Hilbert’s in “what if?” mode. So he’s gone off and plugged three GTX280s in his rig – totaling “just” 749W of draw on his PSU (the full system). It’s a great scaling test, and Hilbert really teases you leaving the Tri-SLI numbers for late in the article. Contrary to yesterday’s headline, Guru3D’s results show Triple SLI pulling its weight and delivering astonishing… nay… mind-boggling results at 2560x1600. Enough for him to start babbling on about Pam Anderson’s boobs and so forth. He’s definitely lost it, wethinks, but the graphs are there. Catch it quick.

With more and more 4-series motherboards coming out, manufacturers are working to distinguish themselves from the masses. One example is MSI and their P45 Platinum mobo. With limited time to spare in the lab TweakTown did manage to pull some decent overclocking figures. The P45 has many similarities with its X48 forefather, and Cameron thinks “you really can’t go wrong” with this one.

Pro Clockers just can’t get their hands-off the new Asrock A780FullDisplayPort. It’s a well-rounded mobo with IGP+DisplayPort based on the 780G chippery. It’s micro-ATX but even features 4 DIMM slots so you can take full advantage of the affordable pricing on DDR2 right now. It also has 6 SATA ports so you can actually turn this into a mini-server. The BIOS has plenty of tweaking options, but you should look at the details yourself. Read the review.

Benchmark Reviews was one of a couple of sites we missed on GTX 280 day so we’re doing them justice by publishing the link to their article and I4U and HardOCP and... We have much love for you guys… honest.

Actually there are also a couple of updates to the GTX 280 coverage, namely Anandtech spotted some details regarding CUDA on the GTX 280. It does seem that Nvidia will have to open up the development books in order to get CUDA development at full steam.

Lastly but not least importantly, we mentioned yesterday that Hardspell had published some graphs about SLI vs 280 GTX performance. Well, we went up and down the article and didn’t recognize the graphs for what they were: Anandtech’s own work. So here’s a heartfelt apology to Anand for not crediting his crew with the SLI performance details. Bad Hardspell. Bad.

Also, WD has been using 2.5-inch platters on the Raptors since 2003, according to an eagle-eyed reader, which kinda makes us chew crow on yesterday’s comment about the shift to 2.5-inch. µ

I dunno

Is there anybody around who seriously thinks any game warrants spending that kind of cash on a system?
Just curious.
Would it not be more fun and do some real stuff for that money? You can you know.

3-way SLI benchmarks?

They did the 3-way SLI benchmarks on a totally different -- and extremely overclocked -- system, and then they compare with their single and SLI results from the stock 680i board? That's total crap...

INQ Poll

Authorities in several countries raided Megaupload recently, shut down all of its services, seized hundreds of servers and arrested several of its executives on criminal charges.

Do you think the move was justified?
