Alienware shows off two gaming notebooks

CES 007 Black and silver
Mon Jan 15 2007, 12:42
THERE WERE TWO similar but different Alienware laptops at CES. Both were 17" gaming parts, but they looked quite different. The m5790 and the m9750 are much more than just different case colors and two swapped digits though.

The m5790 is the big dog even though it has a lower model number. It's a silver laptop with an overclocked Core Number Numeral processor, a 1920 * 1200 screen and two hard drives. It has an X1900 for a GPU, holding the ATI banner up high.

Up to bat for the green team is the m9750 sporting dual 7950GTX GPUs. It also has dual hard drives, an OC'd CNN CPU, and a TV tuner with surround sound. On top of this you get the traditional Alienware ribbed screen back, for her pleasure. It may not be all that great for putting in your bag with a lot of paperwork, but it sure looks nice.

Speaking of nice, the black matte is a close clone of the Apple Pretention 5000, sold in this country as the black iBook. It is a very nice finish, and if you get the option, I would really recommend it over the silver.

Both models look like decent gaming boxes, but I would not count on them for anything resembling long battery life. This pretty much shoots them down as work boxes even if mirrored hard drives add to one's peace of mind. Still, SLI and 1920*1200 gaming on a notebook is pretty compelling if you can get work to pay for it. µ
