HP tells Taiwan to get off China's case

Keep politics out of business, Ho says
Tuesday, 22 July 2003, 11:49
THE CEO OF HP Taiwan has told senior government officials that they should keep politics out of business so the island can exploit the huge population of mainland China.

According to today's Economic News, Rosemary Ho said that the country can't afford to spurn the mainland population and should keep politics out of business.

China claims that Taiwan - formerly known as Formosa - belongs to it, a claim that most on the island view with scepticism.

Ho told the government officials that Taiwan should re-engineer itself as a hub for the mainland and move fast to open direct links.

There are several things to note about Ho's remarkable intervention. The first is that Taiwan is a democracy and China isn't.

Rather than Taiwan keep politics out of business, perhaps Ms Ho should keep business out of politics, we suggest.

Perhaps if Taiwan returned all the beautiful artefacts in the Taipei museum that were originally housed in Beijing, China will give up its claims and let the Taiwanese people live in peace. ยต
