Anti-DRM campaigners go tagging at Amazon

Defective by design

A BUNCH OF ANTI-DRM webnaughts are taking their protest to the net by tagging just about everything incorporating DRM on amazon.com with the name of their website, "DefectiveByDesign".

DRM, for the unaware, stands for Digital Rights Management. The DefectiveByDesign lads and ladettes (?) prefer to call it Digital Restrictions Management, as it supposedly infringes the user's right and access to all forms of digital data.

President of the Free Software Foundation Richard Stallman says on the DefectiveByDesign web page that "the motive for DRM schemes is to increase profits for those who impose them, but their profit is a side issue when millions of people's freedom is at stake... Defending freedom means thwarting DRM."

You can check out the 533 products tagged "defectivebydesign" at Amazon. Products tagged range from Blu-ray disc players to audio CDs to ipods and Windows XP. µ
