Coolermaster sink like V8 engine block, 5GB Seagate drives

Charlie corrals the hardware press steers, y'all

MORE BITS FROM ASSORTED press announcements that I find for some reason cool. The first one is cool in function and aspects, the Coolermaster Hyper 48 heatsink/fan. This all copper monster has four heat pipes coming out of it, and looks like a V8 engine block. It is capped with a 92mm fan for silent running, and looks like no other heatsink on the market. It also has a universal mounting kit for LGA775 and K8 CPUs. I like V8s and I like the look of this.

Next up is a slick little chip, the LSI LSISAS1068 8-port SAS controller IC. This may not sound like much at all, S-ATA boards have had 8 port solutions out for a while. The thing about this is that each SAS port can have 8 drives or more on it, and if the expanders I saw at IDF are any hint, you can put a lot of drives on a card made with a LSISAS1068. 32 drives should be considered a starting point. Now if only I could get a manufacturer to send me 64 SAS drives to test the thing on.....

Moving steadily along into the server world we get to the Tyan Tomcat i845GV, aka the S3098. This board is aimed at the low end, low cost server space, from 1U rack mount to entry level pedestal servers. If you hadn't guessed, it is based on the Intel i845GV chipset, so it has on board graphics. This may not seem like a great leap for servers, but compared to the way to crusty ATI chips normally found on this type of board, the ability to break 1024*768 will be a huge boon.

If you want to take pictures of any of the above stuff, Benq might have your camera. It came out with five new models, the DC C60 and C62, E41 and E30, and a C51. The C60 and C62 are the workhorses of the bunch, 6 Megapixels, 2 inch LCD, quick startup times, and a 3x optical zoom. The E30 and E41 are the lookers of this crop, the E30 is a 3MP model and the E41 is a 4MP camera. The E41 features a touch screen so you can annotate the pictures by hand, a neat idea, while the E30 is the ultra-slim model. Lastly, we have the C51, in case you haven't figured out how the numbers work yet, it is a 5MP camera with 3x optical zoom and a 2 inch LCD. The take home message here is that BenQ is in the camera market now, expect prices to start tumbling. We all win at that game.

Last we have something that could be a very nice accessory for the digital camera set, the Seagate 5GB Pocket Hard Drive. This is an external USB 2.0 HD in a case that looks like a first generation iMac hockey puck mouse, but not as transparent. I saw one in the store the other day, so they are out in the wild. It eats a memory stick for lunch in capacity, and costs less per GB than flash. This could be a winner for travellers and photographers. ยต
