On-Communications embraces Wimax

Spreading wireless love to the UK
Thu Jul 03 2008, 14:06

ON-COMMUNICATIONS, a fixed wireless access (FWA) provider in the UK has said it will move its network over to a Wimax platform using Airspan’s Micromax technology.

A company press release blathers on about the increasing demand, “for next generation Ethernet services”, to explain why, after testing it out, the firm settled on Airspan’s Micromax, while replacing existing networks with equipment that’s Wimax compliant.

On-Communications says it has already installed Fixed Wireless Access equipment in London, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds and Oxford, which it boasts now gives the firm the title of the largest FWA ISP in the UK.

The firm’s CEO, Ian Roberts, used a puzzling choice of words when he said “For some time now, Wimax has threatened to come of age as a stable technology platform for Fixed Wireless Access to business customers,” adding, “we feel it is now truly ready for prime time deployment”.

Wimax thunderbirds are go. µ
