Patched AACS cracked again

And so it goes
Friday, 13 April 2007, 09:31
THE LATEST, PATCHED version of the 'super secure' AACS next generation DVD standard has been hacked already.

Only a week after the DVD Security Group smugly issued a patch fixing an exploit that enabled hackers to get keys from the disk, hackers have announced they have by-passed that. This time they seem to have used a converted Xbox 360 add-on. According to Slashdot, the hackers on the Doom9 forum have patched the patch, making it more or less useless.

Although it has not been attempted for a Blu-Ray disk yet, the forums seem to believe it is only a matter of time.

It looks like the 'unhackable' AACS standard will become like Microsoft Windows, with new holes being found just as soon as they are patched.

At the moment it does not seem to be the commercial pirates that are interested in doing this, but hobby hackers who are miffed that the DRM in AACS does not allow them to play disks in their PCs or make back-ups. ยต
