$100 laptops may be delayed

End of the year

THE FABLED $100 PC for the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project is unlikely to appear in volume until near year end.

According to the Chinese Commercial Times - and cited by DigiTimes - the maker of the system, Quanta, has not yet placed component orders.

The OLPC has already taken a few knocks with rising costs mean the true price is well over 100 bucks and naysayers such as Bill Gates putting the mockers on the design. However, the innovative design might also be striking fear in the land of the PC giants because a commercial version of the product could lead to a new low price point. µ
