I wrote a story on microprocessors once. Paper would have been better - The Evil Dr Spinola
This time - and it's the last Opteron Benchmarchitecture tests we're publishing today - hopefully, it's a series of tests conducted by the Brookhaven National Lab, which compares QSOL dual Opterons compared to SGI, Dell, and other servers.
The servers compared are the SGI Origin 2000, the SGI Origin 300, a Pentium III-S 700MHz system running Linux, a Dell Xeon 1.7GHz system, the 530N, a QSOL AMD Opteron dual system, a Dell Optiplex GX260 P4 system, and a Dell Latitude laptop [Eh? Ed.]
These results show that the Opteron system far outstrips the other boxes tested, as you can read for yourself, here.
Are these fair comparisons? Probably not. Is anything fair in love, war, or benchmarketing? Check out this Intel page here. A reader points out that the additional cache on the Xeons mostly benefits server tasks. We haven't seen Xeon 1MB L3 cache benchmarks yet. Possibly Intel can help on this one.
Please, no more AMD benchmarks today... ยต
