AMD "screwing channel", incandescent dealers claim

Resellers up in arms
Wednesday, 1 November 2006, 08:06
AMD'S partners in the US are fuming about a chip shortage which seems to have been created by the outfit cuddling up to Dell.

According to Computer Reseller News, Glen Coffield, president of CheapGuys said the shortage of Athlon 64 X2 processors was a fiasco.

He said that there was no product in the channel and any gear AMD made was going to Dell.

AMD's loyal system builders now feel used, abused and cast aside like an old hankie while the chipmaker swans off with its new chums Dell and other top-tier OEMs, he said.

Coffield said that he was being treated like a "red-headed stepchild" and we all know the problems of being ginger in today's world.

He said that Chipzilla was always a company for the big guys, and AMD was always a company for the small guys.

The channel partners of AMD had been thrown to the wolves while the firm was screwing the channel.

The only stock available was stuff, single-core and low-power stuff no one wants, he said.

However he may not be completely right. Some industry observers wondered if the shortage stems from AMD's switch to 65 nanometre manufacturing. Another possibility reason for the shortage is that AMD sold a lot of its chips in a big US government deal recently. That, along with its multi-million dollar Dell deal would have emptied AMD's store room completely. µ
