Sony deal discriminates against Canadians

DRM deal is nicer to Americans

MAKER OF DRM rootkits, Sony, is getting into more hot water as it tries to make things right in the Commonwealth country of Canada.

Sony is trying to strike a deal with Canada and its Yankee neighbour over the Sony RootKit fiasco, but it seems that it is treating all those with the Queen as the head state a little differently.

Not only will Canadians get 10 per cent less cash from the deal, Sony will not give them uninstallers to take its spyware off their machines. Nor will it have to conduct a security review to make sure it doesn't happen again.

To make matters worse, a document explaining why Sony thinks Canadians should suffer more for its actions than Americans was kept out of the public's hands.

However, clever Michael Geist has managed to get his paws on a copy and published it in his bog here.

He says the document shows Sony's Vice President, Legal and Business Affairs, Christine Prudham making shedloads of dubious claims in a bogus legal wrangling that places Sony in a further bad light and to cast doubt about its sincerity in addressing a major PR cock-up. ยต
