Man gets electricity bill for over £2 trillion

Offers to pay it off at a penny a week
Tuesday, 4 March 2003, 12:05
A YORKSHIRE MAN got an electricity bill for £2,320,333,681,613 and because he didn't immediately stump up faced having all his assets seized, reports the Yorkshire Post.

Brian Law got the bill from British Gas (don't ask), after he moved into a new house last year, and delayed setting up a standing order until he could figure out what the size of the bill was likely to be.

But after he missed paying a smaller payment of £59, he got a final letter from British Gas warning him that he'd be dragged into a court if he didn't stump up the money immediately.

The figure on that final demand was £2.3 trillion and after two hours talking to a call centre, talked to a woman who told him there must have been some kind of mistake.

The Yorkshire Post said Brian was resigned to paying the money and would offer to pay a penny a week to clear the outstanding amount.

But after Yorkshire Post tykes came to the rescue, British Gas admitted there was a mistake in the billing.
