Low powered LCD screens create Intel notebook breakthrough

More life on the road
Thursday, 1 April 2004, 14:47
TODAY'S ECONOMIC NEWS reports that Intel and Toppoly have together developed LCD panels that will only draw three watts.

The move is a breakthrough for Intel and the rest of us, because one of the biggest drains on notebook computers is the LCD screen, which normally eat up around 10 watts or more.

According to the Economic News, samples of the LCD screens are already shipping to third parties for evaluation.

Toppoly Optoelectronics, a subsidiary of big Taiwanese original design manufacturer Quanta, and Intel co-developed the display as part of a larger initiative with other hardware companies to reduce power consumption on notebooks.

As well as working on low powered LCDs, other members of the Intel-steered Mobile Extended Battery Life Working Group are working on other elements that will also improve the effective life of a notebook, and on fuel cell technology. µ
