Chip giants tear up cunning fab plan

Wham, bam, toys thrown out of pram

A WIZARD wheeze by Renesas, Toshiba, Hitachi and others to compete against pure play Taiwanese foundries and Korean fabs appears to have ended in tears.

According to today's Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the parties have agreed to disagree to collaborate because they don't think they'll be able to make money.

The plan was backed by the Japanese government and was intended to build a heap of chips at line widths of 65 nanometres and below.

But after disagreements, it seems each of the three majors has had an attack of throwing its toys out of the pram syndrome, and the JV will disappear in June. µ
