Cyber-criminals use Google trends

Hack of choice
Fri Oct 03 2008, 09:39

INSECURITY EXPERTS claim that cyber-criminals who want to steal data and take control of computers by luring victims to sites with hidden malware are using Google Trends as their weapon of choice.

Google Trends lists the most frequently searched topics, displays them on a graph, and shows news articles and blog posts that relate to that topic.

All the bad guys need to do is see what's hot on Google Trends, and add related news headlines, stories, and videos to a malicious Web site to increase the site's ranking on Google's search site.

Then it is just a matter of waiting for the saps to arrive and watch the malware fly to freedom. Still it is nice to know that someone is not just using Google Trends as a way to peddle annoying goods and services at you… oh! µ
