AMD accelerators to give servers a boost

With all the fanfare of a press release
Wed Mar 22 2006, 07:10
IT LOOKS LIKE the first bits of the AMD accelerator strategyare peeking their heads out of the Arctic tundra in early spring.

AMD, Xilinx and Celoxica announced they are working together to bring the FPGAs and related environments to Opteron based systems. The press release by itself isn't all that exciting.

What is a bit more worthy of notice is that the accelerators are here a lot earlier than most were thinking.. Notice the wording, they use phrases like "a tightly coupled co-processor expansion capability" and "Virtex-4 FPGAs as a co-processor". This is no normal product announcement, it is a shot across the bows, and there will be a lot more to follow. µ
