Chinese take away porn

Youtube-alike shut down
Fri Mar 07 2008, 17:47

CHINESE OFFICIALS have ordered a popular video site, Tudou, to shut down for failing to remove all the site's porn vids. Tudou, which means potato, is the Chinese equivalent of YouTube, where porn is always much appreciated

Chinese language portal, Netease last night, claimed China's SARFT (State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television) had clamped down on the popular site. Several influential bloggers confirmed the closedown orders whilst several others (including people purporting to be Tudou staffers) denied the rumours. Chinese whispers all around then.

The site Tudou.com does still seem to be working, and it's thought by some bloggers that the whole kerfuffle could just be a rumour started by one of the site's competitors.

Meanwhile, Marbridge Consulting, which keeps an eye on the Chinese tech industry, claims to have confirmed with unnamed authorities that Tudou has indeed been ordered to shut down.

All rather confusing really. µ
