Sony makes profit despite PS3 bleed

Fat panels, strong yen

JAPANESE GIANT Sony said it's turned in a net profit of ¥32.29 billion for its latest quarter, a turn round from the net loss of ¥7.26 billion it made in the same period last year.

Group sales of ¥1.744 trillion were boosted by sales of Bravia LCD TVs, digital cameras, and its Vaio range of PCs.

Despite the success of highbrow film The Da Vinci Code, its film division managed an operating loss.

But what will be of not inconsiderable interest is that its console business is bleeding money as the firm winds up for a launch later this year. µ
