Sun softpedals on desktop Linux

Channel Java Desktop System on backburner

SUN HAS admitted that it is backing away from plans to sell the Linux operating system for desktop computers.

In a press briefing this week, executive vice president of software John Loiacono said Java Desktop System will still exist as a product, but as part of Sun's Solaris operating system and as such more relevant to programmers than end users.

"You're going to see less of an emphasis on JDS on Linux," he said. "The strategy has changed slightly."

Actually it's changed quite a lot from three years ago when JDS was launched with hopes of torpedoing Windows below the waterline. But of course Microsoft and Sun are mates now. µ
