Limp Dems attack government on surveillance state

Never trust the people
Thursday, 7 February 2008, 08:54

BLIGHTY'S 'third way' hope-to-have-a-balance-of-power-one-day party, the Liberal Democrats have attacked the government for making Britain the "most spied country on the planet ".

Nick Clegg, the Liberal Democrat leader, slammed dour scot Prime Minster Gordon Brown for creating a "surveillance state".

Brown's spinners are reeling from the recent news that coppers had bugged a Labour MP Sadiq Khan while he was talking to a constituent (in jail) and the announcement that there were plans to fingerprint 5000 school kids.

Clegg wondered if this sort of thing was what Brown meant when he spoke of the great British tradition of liberty recently.

Of course Clegg is a bit of a lone wolf in the wilderness. The UK's CCTV network was put in by the opposition Conservative party when it had control of the government.

Brown said that British people were "reassured" by the presence of CCTV. Of course he could feel confident that as a Scot most of the worst spying laws do not apply to his home country because it has a different legal system.

Most of the MPs were probably asleep when Clegg rounded on Brown in the televised debate. ยต

knock if off

I have the same concerns with privacy vs. security as anyone else but this issue is not helped by whiney punks who spout about the most spied upon state and such.

1st. If you really lived in a police state you would now be in prison or dead.

2nd. As for the "most" try North Korea or Syria you idiots. The KGB (remember them?) estimated that Syria had so may agents that 1 out of every 242 was a spy, nearly all watching each other and Syrian civilians. The UK and US have security issues for sure, and because of that are trying to deal with this and privacy at the same time. They will likely get this wrong a few times before it's right.

Having some idiot stand by and spout gibberish, all while having not one clue about what they are talking about is faintly annoying. I suggest going to Iran and stand on a street corner and protest something.

knock it up

I found the Cleggs more glibberish than gibberish. However, Cleggs being Cleggs are what they are to the beholder: fried, scrambled, over-easy, even poached.
