MXM tested, could be the Poor Man's SLI

Hardware Roundup And more wibbles

TWO SMALL snippets first. NGOHQ reports that Nvidia is in no rush to stamp out a rather dangerous driver bug in the Forceware 81.85 drivers which bypasses, so to say, monitor control panels. The only solution for now is to remove the drivers. Over at Tech report, Scott updates us about how Intel screwed it when it came to the Pentium EE 955 setup. which caused throttling. The new Intel combo is noisier and less efficient, but it does it job.

HKEPC reviews the desktop version of Nvidia's MXM which is the equivalent to an upgradable GPU. Any go to the website to know what I'm talking of. Nvidia does a fine job here. The Microstar Geminium allows two Geforce 6600GO to run on a desktop. Although a SLI motherboard was employed, I don't know if you can need a SLI motherboard to make it work. Interestingly the Geminium comes on top of the comparision with two Geforce 6600. Could that be the poor man's SLI? Can someone translate it for me?

Tweaktown shows how Epox is vying to save the hsocket 754 platform, now condemned to disappear. The Taiwanese firm has released the 8NPA SLI motherboard which has a socket 754 and SLI. Frankly speaking though, better save your money and buy a real socket 939 motherboard with SLI and stick in the fastest GPU your money can buy. The board on itself is far from being rubbish - it has GbE LAN as well as SATA/PATA Raid bridging which is very good indeed.

Trustedreviews has tested a Trustedreviews has tested a Panasonic Toughbook CF-18 rugged notebook. It can withstand drops of 90cm and the reviewer takes particular pleasure in letting in fall face outwards. It is a Centrino compatible lappy, with a Pm ULV inside, 512MB memory and a 60GB HDD. Now not only are you connected wirelessly but you can also trek for hours thanks to the six hour battery.

PC Perspective reviews the Epox EP-5NVA+ which is a SLI nForce 4 Intel motherboard. Nothing exceptional to distinguish it from the rest of the motherboards out there. Ten USB ports, 8-ch Audio, GbE LAN, Nvidia SLI chipset, SATA2 with Raid Support, Firewire and four DDR slots. A great overclocker, a good price and possibly, one of the best SLI motherboards for Intel's platform.

3DXtreme reviews the Terratec Mystify Claw which is as you might guess a gaming device aimed at hardcore gamers. Terratec did some good audio cards and some other multimedia cards at one time. The claw is supposed to replace the keyboard to some extent since it has up to 100 commands per button. It is comfortable to use, has a long cable, which is always welcomed but might not be perfect for large hands.
