Governments worldwide delay WiMAX future

They need to get their fingers out
Thursday, 15 November 2007, 15:35

DILATORY BEHAVIOUR by governments across the world is delaying the implementation of WiMAX installs, giant telecoms firm Huawei said today.

Tan Zhu, director of wireless marketing in Europe, said that governments are delaying granting licences to deregulate frequencies for the technology. The technology is ready to go, but until the politicos take action, nothing is likely to happen.

Intel and others have hailed WiMAX as a good way to deliver broadband, and so information, to places in the world that are disconnected from the web revolution.

Zhu said it was too early to say whether 3G or WiMAX is the better technology.

But that isn't the problem. The problem is the lack of efforts to move on issuing licences. He said: "All governments should make a decision about this." µ

EVDO is here now

If you get tired of waiting for WiMax to actually arrive within range of your house, then look into your local EDVO providers. Similar speeds to WiMax, similar range, maybe a bit more dollars per month.

I've given up waiting for WiMax and I've ordered an EDVO modem. But I'll be on a month-to-month contract in case I get a better offer.

Indonesia

Do anyone can answer when someone in Indonesia will implemented EV-DO? May be after 6G? They have EV-DO implemented but there is no flatrate. The funny things is the have 3G with 64 kbps and HDSPA with 800 kbps (How it the hell network utilization of Indonesian bandwidth?). I wonder when Wi-Max is out, may be we just barely got 64 kbps?
Many of Westren tourist say "A lousy 56 K" about internet in Indonesia. I thing Indonesia will not have Mbps internet for resenable flatrate price.

WiMax = Propreitary

Intel is only looking to squeeze more conformity from the industry players
by offering WiMax.
It will be subtle and convoluted but that is what Corporations with monopolistic tendicies do to maintain control of rivals.

WiMAX in Romania

Here in Romania the Communications Ministry is has drafted an Emergency Order (the name sounds more pompous than it actually is...) in which it plans to cut the frequency bands of 3600-3659 MHz and 3701-3759 MHz from under the Radiocom management (formerly known as National Radiocommunications Society - SNR - S.N. RadiocomunicaĊ£ii S.A.) for this purpose by May 31st 2008, and will issue separate licenses for it.

The legal status of this act is still as "draft", it has been published for consultation but not been officially adopted, and i don't know when will it be. However, it says that by january 1st 2008, the Communications Ministry will adopt the strategy for use of the frequency bands freed by the National Radiocommunications Society, so it must be adoopted real soon.

Even so, don't hold your breath, as the government here is known for missing a lot of deadlines. Oh well....
