New Slackware release is out

Version 12 does not hit the shops
Tuesday, 3 July 2007, 09:53
THR PROJECT TEAM responsible for Slackware distribution has released its 12th stable version of the software.

Slackware version 12.0 supports the 2.6 kernel series and developers say it has been fine-tuned to get the most out of it.

The version uses Xfce 4.4.1 as its desktop environment, and KDE 3.5.7. Slackware support is extended for HAL (the Hardware Abstraction Layer) so that the system administrator to add users to the cdrom and plugdev groups. This will enable plug and play of USB gear.

There is Kernel support for X DRI (the Direct Rendering Interface) which makes high-speed hardware accelerated 3D graphics possible. Slackware has dumped the one-piece X11 Window System for the newest modular X11 from X.Org. It can be downloaded here. ยต
