AMD set to start chip war

Analysts ready for battle
Monday, 31 March 2008, 09:52

ANALYSTS, bean counters and other beard strokers claim that when AMD releases shedloads of products this month, it will spark another chip war.

The AMD Barcelona-based processors are expected to hit the shops in a couple of weeks and a 65-watt quad-core desktop chip and a triple-core desktop chip are also expected.

This has lead the analysts to believe that there will suddenly be some competition in a market that has been dominated by Chipzilla.

Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat said it was good to see AMD back in the game. But he added that the outfit will have problems in an all out war as it still had not recovered from the last one.

He pointed out that Intel plans to start shipping a six-core processor, called Dunnington, to resellers in the second half of this year using 45nm technology.
Nathan Brookwood, an analyst at research firm Insight 64 told ComputerWorld that competition and innovation would be even greater if both companies were firing on all cylinders again.

But Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group said for AMD to truly be firing on all cylinders again, it had to get a few more products out the door. µ

Is there a need for 6 cores ?

Why dont we get some quiet time to digest 'just' four cores ... this six/eight core issue seems to be Intel-only hype left. Intel should concentrate on catching up with their version of the HT bus.

Mike MA Geek Stated IT Right.

Here, that Famous Pundits, Michael Vaughn McGeeks has Correct Pitch. AMD is Exploring 4 Core World in Slightly Limp Second Place to Gather More Data & GPU U Facts (Presently at 6 GPU Max) to Designed MOTHERGOD Of ALL Processors, OCTO.

AMD is NOT Dumb, They Have FABS Up Kiester, So Ripping Market With $100 Quads Next Month is Going To Be Delight.

Xeon MP Richard

Richard, I guess you have no experience in the server space? Dunnington is a Xeon MP part used in 4+ way servers.

"But Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group said for AMD to truly be firing on all cylinders again, it had to get a few more products out the door."

I want an analyst job.

AMD doing 6 cores too

Apparently there is a market for Tri-corers and Hex-corers

Hex Core suxors

Hey if PS3 has like 8 or 9 cores init then why is anybody satisfied with 6??????? That is horrible situation.
I will not buy anything with less than 16 cores, PS3 included, and I may hold out for 64 cores. And it better be less than $200 full system!! Grr.

Keyword being:

"Claim"

As they've done for the past 2 years.

As for cores... AMD would do the same if they had the chance. The reason they're using 3 core processors is simply because they're too far in the hole and can't afford to throw chips away when one of the cores on a quad goes bad while being burned (which is happening way too often). So, in return, they cut one out and market a 3 core.

True story.

Nonetheless, whether anyone likes it or not... AMD is getting spanked. There's no reason to whine about HT. It's like stomping on the gas when you can't see headlights in your rear view anyway.
