Spam makes you popular

Friends, who needs 'em?
Wednesday, 27 September 2006, 17:15
AN AUSSIE BLOGGER has discovered that spam is the best way to make friends and influence people.

John Wardle's blog, which is devoted to promoting live music in pub venues, has taken all of the top five "most popular" slots on the BigBlog bogsite.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Wardle forgot to switch on a comment verification system and has had his feedback section flooded with spam. Most of his recent posts have had about 1200 and 1600 comments each. Most of them were nonsensical spam messages.

On the bonus side, because BigBlog calculates popularity of a bog on the amount of comments it gets, Wardle is considered extremely popular.

BigPond, who runs the site, are considering reviewing the use of comments as a measure of a blog's popularity.

They are thinking of using page views as the basis of working out if you have real friends.
