With Microsoft and Intel, we're the holy trinity - Jerry Sanders III+
THE GUYS AT Digitimes seem to have got a peep at some Intel roadmaps for its “Montevina” range to be introduced in June.
It has introduced further segments for the power usage of its microprocessors – a favourite Intel practice is to SKU-up its chips.
According to the report, it will introduce “S” products to the range of chips which are tagged as being “highly energy efficient”.
Details of the offerings are here, along with the suggestion that you’ll be able to buy quad core notebook chips in the third quarter of this year. µ
OK we have truly lost our CORE values on this one...

4 cores! What on earth can the average user want with 4 cores... in a LAPTOP? Better DivX encoding on a slow 2.5/1.8" HD based
lap warmer?

Vista, even with the bloat and float turned on, uses about 23% of ONE core! Ok lets add two spreadsheets, a word document from
the HR management squad (4433 pages, naturally to be read by yesterday) and we hit 25%!!!! Watching the latest and greatest
DRM infested sugar coated VW beetle advert and you need a whopping 87%.... of only ONE!!!!

I love technology but buying one of these is more stupid that buying an iPhone cos of the bleeding edge functionality. As for
super power saving... that's just bad math. Put these power tricks into a single core Pentium M, rattle it up to 2Ghz.
Do the world a real favor.

God, if there is a god, help these poor stupid people to see the light...

/Awol
see the pun in the title, funny that!!!

Anyway i thought the desktop unit only used 2.5watts when idle and 25 when under load. How much more efficant can you get.
If you are a power freak like me, don't wait.

Get a quadro notebook now. Here are the fastest notebooks in the world.

1. PCMicroworks Black-Hawk XR5 Quad-Core
with dual Nvidia Geforce Go SLI 8800 GTX

2. Sager NP9262

3. EUROCOM D90xC PHANTOM-X

4. Falcon Northwest FragBook DRX

These will be even faster in the next 30 days once the new 45nm Penryn Quad-Core CPU is available.

Man looking @ the efficiency is unbelievable. So A 2core penryn Mobile should really extend battery life. No need for 4 core a 2core penryn = 4core phenom. Been proven
The more cores the better!
Gimme more core!

Maybe one of them cores can make me a sandwich!
Hungry for Intel Quad core, hungry, hungry hippo!

More core,
More core!
Noooo, no quad core desktop piece gets 25 watts under load...more like 2.5-10 idle (depends what is running in background)

and 95 watts under load... the new quads are lower like 55w.

if you want a 25 watter you gonna get a celeron m....pathetic performance... better just get that sempron 1100 at 11w.

While is see quads on my lap as useless... i hope this will lead to more ee desktops cpus as well... other wise its completely useless
Yes, dumb people might run out and buy these to have the latest greatest.

However, what you fail to see are the people that a mobile quad core will benefit.

I produce drum'n'bass and do live DJing & live PA. I'll take 4 cores in a laptop in a second.

In an audio production environment, an extra core can add almost a whole extra PCs worth of processing capability to your output chain.

Still though, considering the probable associated costs, I think I'm going to stick with building a quad-core SFF system.
I'm sure someone will find a way to max all 4 cores. Besides, wasn't it Bill Gates that said, "64k ought to be enough for anyone"?
The market for a mobile/low wattage quadcore will be majority professional (business folks, engineers and technicians on the go) in the form of laptops and industrial miniITX boards. Yes there will be a small number of gamers that want to brag.

I see no reason to denounce the application of new tech just because the average person wouldn't have use for it.
Dear The core in blighty just because you use your laptop for word/excel and watching movies doesn't mean that everybody does it the same way. I for one do record music on mine, and when I have a couple of soft samplers, several soft sytnths and a couple of soft guitar effects are up, my laptop can't take it anymore. These processes all need soft real-time processing, the more cores I have the better. Oh and I know a lot of people who does this or something close to this be it music, photography, movie production whatever.

Not everybody is a bore like you just working with office applications. Even so, have a 50MB excel file with a good chuck of VB macros and let's see how much cpu time it takes huh?
It may be overkill for business users, but that is not the intended market. It opens up all sorts of possibilities for video professionals for handling field acquisition of HD video.

Not taking away anything from the wonderful Centrino.
A previous commentator showed a so-called rightful indignation about a 4 cores CPU in a laptop. Well, so many times I've seen such comments about the too-much power in the computer world that

I think that they belong to kinda club or something - that of retrograde people.

There is never such "too much" power or resources at the disposal of a IT user. I have a 4 cores CPU and I can say that for video editing is a minimum - I wish I had an 8 cores so that I don't have to wait for 35-40 minutes for a 2 G video file to be rendered in an mpeg format after I did the editing. With a 2 cores the video editing is almost a heroic deed.

Now the bottleneck of computers is the HD - ancient technology that prevent the machines to work at an appropriate speed.

Every major in the industry understood that and began the SSD production that will replace the HD first in the laptops as especially there the HDs are the slowest, not to mention their other disadvantages: consumption, heat, noise, sensitivity to shocks, etc.
Is this replacement also a "too much" measure for the progress of the technology that we use ?

About such retrograde individuals all how one can react is how Babu (from Seinfeld) used to reply: "Bad person, you are a very bad and mean person !"
Can't I just have one core with double the cache and like 40% of the power usage?

I mean really email, web browsing office? Please.

Maybe AMD will come through with this. A low end single core that is useful instead of just plain silly.

I guess if you have a blueray drive and want to watch HD movies on the plane... but still.
Awol.....

I'd luv a Quad Core in a laptop.......a gaming laptop......nothing like playing UT3 and have your AV kick on. Talk about lag. My home system has a Q6600 and I luv it.......I never have to worry about the AV kicking on or anything else for that matter. I mean if it's too powerful for you, grab your ol' 486 laptop and use that. Your comment sounds like that Comcast comercial showing the turtle.

ROFL
SSD is the answer

by the end of this year there will be slew of laptops on the high end with SSDs instead of slow coal burning HDs
coincidently at the same times laptops might get quads

aiiit i must say, not your father laptop anymore :)
Why shouldn't laptops get Quad cores if they can be done efficiently and effectively? They're already available in desktop in a laptop models, but if you can make it more efficient, then why not?

Some of us have migrated to one single VERY powerful laptop, because we want the power for video-editing and gaming and at the same time the portability for using wherever in the house or on the road that we want.

Perhaps for someone who lives in their parents basement and has nowhere to go, maybe you don't see the need, but the rest of us would rather have a nice single machine that did everything rather than have to buy a desktop for one thing and a laptop for another.

If it weren't for the push of powerful and efficient laptops pushing Pentium-Ms you'd still be stuck in your Netburst P4 architecture frying SPAM & eggs on your desktop in that basement.

Perhaps you should stop telling other people how to spend their money and use technology because you don't seem to understand either.
God, if there is a god, help these poor stupid people to see the light...

Guy, you know damn well that ppl like to have what they don't need. It doesn't matter that I will never use any more than one core, it's that I have the availablity of much more that is gratifying to most ppl. You don't need that sports car with 600 horses either, but you still bought it.

America's motto: BIGGER AND MORE IS BETTER. Remember that next time you make a how stupid ppl really are.

As an Intel employee, even I want a quad core notebook.

Well with all the lower power needs of these new processors: maybe they hope to come up with a proccesor that can be powered by double a batteries?
Thanks for your comments Awol It's people like you that incite others to voice there opinions. Keep up the good work!
> As an Intel employee, even I want a quad core notebook.

So get one...
