MICROSOFT’S automatic update service is again in trouble after countless punters found that a corrupt automatic Vista download stuffed up their computers.
Forum and bulletin boards are full of comments from users who are incandescent with rage after getting a mysterious error code 80073712.
Users who contact the Volish help desk are finding that they are about as useful as suntan lotion to a mole who never goes on holiday.
One reader has complained to us that after using one wonderful Volish suggestion he started getting another error with the code of 800B0100.
Tapping in Google with the number 800737712 reveals shedloads of other Vista sufferers.
Over the weekend there was no word from Vole about the problem, or indeed mention of a problem at all. µ

We has an XP machine in the office hosed a few months ago by an XP update. Since we were never given an actual XP disk to fix it (just a restore disk that would wipe everything and take us a few days to recover from), it's still sitting there hosed. It's spouting something about an unknown boot device. Why anybody still uses this rubbish is beyond me.

With the level of computing power we have, computers should do all the work of finding all your drivers and maintaining themselves. Microsoft fanboys would blast Linux for this, and push it out of common use for another few years. Microsoft is becoming nothing but a cancer thats killing computing.
Shedloads, huh? I Googled, and came up with TWENTY SEVEN.

Must be a slow news day if you've got to sling these bullocks at the readers...
hehe, i ended up "refreshing" back to xp after a "fresh" vista install, and "recommended" updates. love aero, not sure of everything else...
The article doesn't say it, but all of these user's computers are still working. I've had the same issue with some computers in XP as well.

This is a non story.

Stew you toop the words right from my keyboard. It's the same thing I was going to say: change update from "auto" to "download and notify me". I read the message on the updates too so if I don't need it or its not really going to fix something thats wrong or might go wrong I'm not going to use that update.
"a mysterious error code 80073712.
" // So the code is 80073712..

"Google with the number 800737712 reveals shedloads" // SO is the code 80073712 or 800737712 lol i know its only a extra 7 but still wanted the artical to be perfect and in all its glory for the Vista fan boys...hahe
This comes with the SP1 "BETA" refresh as far as I know.
Stew, I think this article is refering to the automatic update from maybe.. last friday? the 11th? give or take a day. If so then I, who has always had automatic updates disabled, couldn't do anything about it Downloading and restarting my computer.

I was on XBox LIVE playing COD4 with my good friends and all of a sudden at around 2am, me and 2 others accounted that our Vista-computers were restarting due to an update.

Likewise however, None of us has had a problem with the update...other than the brief moment of "WTF?!"
...Its a feature.

In fact, its a brand new feature for Vista users.

Its codenamed: "Ooops!"
by Microsoft. :D

I googled 80073712, and I got a pile of stories from mid 2007..
...the nasty bug causing the "connection status unknown: server execution failed?" If you are unfamiliar with this issue, type it in google -- or read the many ignored posts at technet:

My 32bit Vista is unfortunately a victim of this disease, and I will soon have to reformat and reinstall because of it. It's going on over a year for christ sake! Is there anything that can be done to make up for the suffering windows consumer? Class action? sheeeesh.

Problem ? What problem !?

Just remember, there is no spoon ...

Matrixial Vole :)
why do ppl still use the auto check and auto dlownload functions,
change it to notify me when updates are available, and let me choose when to install them, so when these problems arise, you would of just not updated until it was fixed

however I havent had any issues with my updates from last week

which patch is casuing the kuffuffle?
What problem. There is no problem. There never was a problem. There never will be. It's just a solution opportunity....
Those guys could derail a wet dream.
