Intel spends a billion to invest in WiMAX

Faint heart never won fair lady

CHIP GIANT Intel has regained its confidence and started spending money like water again.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it has found a cool billion dollars this year to invest in startups and the like.

That's despite the fact that like the Grand Old Duke of York, it had 10,000 men (and women) who it marched right up to the front gate and wouldn't let in again.

The biggest investment this year, said the Journal, is in an operation called Clearwire to help push WiMAX.

It had better spend some money quick on PR, because in Blighty, at least, mums are up in arms in case wi-fi burns up their darlings' brains.

According to the Journal, Intel Capital president Arvind Sodhani reckons it might cost $5 billion to set up a US WiMAX net. µ
