Intel stays on top in chip ranking

Market showing growth year on year
Tue Sep 16 2003, 16:19
FIGURES FOR THE first half of 2003 demonstrate that Intel maintains its position as the number one company to ship semiconductors, outranking the second player, Samsung Electronics.

The figures, from iSuppli, show that a survey of 72 firms which account for 92% of the market, indicate that the industry grew by 9.5% in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year.

Renesas pushes its way into the market because of the merger of Hitachi and Mitsubishi's revenues, while Motorola, not show in the chart below, has dropped to number 10.

Dale Ford, a vice president for iSuppli, said Motorola was the only member of the top 10 to see its revenues decline, by 1.8% year on year. Up and coming firms include Qualcomm, Broadcom, ATI, Seiko and Marvell. µ
