Organic electroluminescents get brighter

OEL's teeth

JAPANESE BOFFINS at Tokyo's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology have developed an organic electroluminescent element that is six times brighter than current OEL displays.

Japanese site nikkei.net reported earlier this week that OEL offers wider viewing angles than conventional displays and can be read in bright sunlight without the need for backlighting.

The new design features better directionality than previous OELs, allowing more light to pass through its two polarising filters rather than scattering back. Researchers believe the directionality can be further increased, making it possible to use only one filter, further improving efficiency.

The prototype uses blue light and the institute is working on a white light version as well as increasing the efficiency of the display. The one square centimetre prototype will need to grow a bit before it can be used in mobile phones. ยต
